A Bristol hospice is blooming with pride after being awarded a sought after community gardening prize at this year's Britain in Bloom Awards.

St Peter's Hospice in Brentry was awarded a Silver Gilt in the competition, which is entered by more than 1,200 communities each year.

This year 24 Gold Medals were awarded and 37 Silver Gilts, with one of which going to Bristol's only adult hospice.

Gardener and maintenance manager at St Peter's Hospice, Sarah Townsend, said the award means a lot to the volunteers who help out as well as the patients who enjoy the garden.

She said: "Despite the wet summer and the numerous extra large slugs and snails, it's fantastic news that St Peter's Hospice has achieved a Silver Gilt at Britain in Bloom 2012.

"The gardens within the hospice grounds mean so much to both patients and their families who are able to enjoy them when they visit. The gardens offer a place to escape and give families a chance to wander around and forget worries for a little while.

"To be awarded this prize is a great boost for all my regular volunteers who give up their time to make the grounds look as beautiful and welcoming as possible.

"I'd also like to thank our corporate sponsors and all those who spur us on by saying how nice the gardens or a particular plant looks."

Chair of the RHS Britain in Bloom UK Judging Panel, Roger Burnett, led a team of 14 volunteer judges who toured the UK in July and August visiting each finalist. Each was marked on horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.

St Peter's Hospice is Bristol's only adult hospice. Services are provided free of charge, but the NHS contribute just 23% of the £6.5 million needed to run the hospice yearly, meaning support from the public is essential.

Last year the hospice cared for 2,675 patients and supported over 6,000 family members including children.
