Support for domestic violence victims: Online web chat

Survivors of domestic violence are logging online to lend a hand to those suffering abuse this Christmas.

The two women, who can't be named for their own safety, will be taking part in a web chat hosted on Wednesday, December 19.

As part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of this form of abuse, the survivors and police officers will be on hand to answer questions about all aspects of domestic violence from 7pm.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of their race, ethnic or religious group, class, disability or lifestyle. It can also take place in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender relationships.

Abuse can take any form, but there are common factors that link the experience of an abusive relationship. Acknowledging these factors is an important step in preventing and stopping the abuse.

Detective Inspector Katie Boxer from the Public Protection Unit said: "We are extremely keen for people to hear first-hand from these women how they can become victims of domestic violence and how difficult it can be to break the cycle.

"These survivors have been brave enough to recognise the signs and end the abuse they suffered at the hands of others. I hope their experience will encourage others to seek the help they need."

DI Boxer added: "Domestic violence is a serious crime that can escalate easily and cause serious injury. There is no excuse and we need your help to stop it. I would specifically urge friends, families and colleagues to look out for signs such as destructive criticism, harassment, threats, sexual violence and physical violence."
