With the recent influx of snow the council is on the lookout for community spirited people to volunteer as snow wardens to help out in the future.

A spokesman said: "We prioritise the major routes for gritting, but our lorries can't get to all the minor roads, steep hills or tricky junctions that can prove difficult to pass in wintry conditions.

"This is where we need the help of the local community to help us keep these areas clear."

By volunteering, you would be asked to:

•    Clear some snow from the footways to help people to get about.

•    Spread grit to prevent ice forming.

•    Encourage a neighbourly attitude to vulnerable people in the area.

How will it work?

Volunteers would be invited to a briefing session, when you would be supplied with protective equipment, snow shovel and the role would be explained in more detail.

To volunteer please contact Simon Creed, Civil Protection Manager on 0117 922 3233 or emerplan@bristol.gov.uk giving them your contact details and identifying the site you would be able to help with.

The next awareness and recruiting session is on Thursday 24 January at City Hall, College Green at 6.30pm.
