I am told that there is a move by Tesco to open an Express store in the old Foresters Inn. ther si a curretnt application for that empty property for the installation of two big air conditioners and a condenser - definitely not needed for a shut down pub. the site is ill suited for yet another Tesco supermarket; traffic is already quite bad enough in thde road and with folk trying to enter and leave the car park. - let alone the noise this equipment will produce for local residents. the looks like a typical softly softly planning approach and if you intend to object you do need to ensure you address the issues raised by the current application, ie the air conditioners and condenser - not the supermarket for which this is not the subject of the application - at this stage!. In case it might assist anyone wanting to object, I attach a copy of my own comments to the Planning department.

"This is I believe a preliminary application by Tesco who arde sidling up to launching a Tesco Express in the old pub, so need these air conditioner units and condenser for their operation. The items will be noisy and intrusive for neighbouring residential properties. There would be absolutely no need for such items for running a pub. it is as plain as a pikestaff that Tesco re targeting Westbury-on-Trym for yet another Express supermarket. We don't need another Tesco. It will create traffic chaos. The game is obvious - apply incrementally for what you need and cloak your intentions behind an innocuous application for some air conditioners/ condensers. i reazlise too that you can only apply planning considerations to the current application. I think that the planning officers are entitled to consider and probe for what purpose these air conditioners and condensers will be put - in a pub? I don't think so! In a supermarket that will threaten to suck the life out of our existing shops? Most certainly."

There are still a number of pubs in the village, and a growing number of café's with another opening soon, okay it will impact on the other food shops in the village, but there are 3 co-ops in Westbury so why not a Tesco Express? At least we didn't get the big Sainsburys a few years ago, and the key to the supermarket is just don't use it, like the Stokes Croft store it is well used even after all the protests so they will keep opening more stores.

It is just an awful location for a supermarket. No room for their shoppers to park.. A narrow very congested street..

But there may be limited means to object - Tesco has adopted the policy of up gobbling up pubs recently because the planning laws make it easy to do so. Practically the only means now to stop them given they got permission for their coolers and condensers is when they apply to change the fascia as I think they may have to. Anyway, do we need another supermarket? It is just another move to turning the village into yet another identikit high street in the service of the great god Tesco. . The other pubs and cafes are all doing okay. The Foresters could, were it properly run.
