Parents at the Oasis School Westbury will find out tonight how the move towards gaining Academy status is progressing.

The school in Brecon Road in Westbury-on-Trym used to be known as St Ursula's but after the administrators were called in over the summer, a campaign was launched to save the school.

It was taken over by the Christian charity Oasis Community Learning and reopened as Oasis School Westbury last month. It is currently an independent, fee-paying, co-educational school open to students aged four to 16 of all religions and none.

It is in the process of applying for Academy status which it is confident of achieving for September 2011 if not before. All places will then be free and available to the local community.

The school will be renamed again when it achieves Academy status. Oasis's founder the Rev Steve Chalke and the director of education John Murphy will bring parents up to date on progress at tonight's meeting which is from 6pm-7pm.

The school's Parents Action Group is currently surveying parents for their views on the shape of the Academy. The group is pushing for the school to remain as an all-through one, catering for four- to 16-year-olds.
