Have you been to the Villager yet?

What great food and value! we ate there last night, received a great welcome and were surprised at the value for money menu. Before 7.15 Tue. to Fri. we could have two courses for £10.00!. I had starter of Mediterranean Mackerel followed by Belly Pork and my partner had Lemon Chicken followed by Confit of Duck in red Wine both main courses served with beautiful fresh vegetables. We both had desserts and the bill? just £26.00. Later in the evening it's still only £12.50 for two courses including Saturday Evening.

Have just moved into the area from London and couldn't wait to try the restaurants. Have been twice to the Villager now including their exceptional value Sunday Lunch which you can also take away and have found it to be everything you want from a neighbourhood restaurant. I frankly was surprised by the quality of the cooking , the great wines on offer and the friendliness surpassed all expectation. I personally am fed up with the glass and chrome self-styled restaurants with very little atmosphere and anything resembling quirkyness and real gets my vote. A local restaurant to be supported and treasured for value, quality and homeliness.

ReportHey, I am not slating the Villager, just the blokes review of it.
Owen Adams, by all means defend your mate, don't give me a hard time just because I have an opinion!! Your diatribe was unwarranted considering I am allowed to speak my mind.
I do understand what he says, I read English and do read his column. I feel most of his pieces are similar in content and he prefers gastropoubs with real ale. I think I did overstep themak by calling him an idiot, for that I apologise but surely you ought to be a bit more considerate to others views consdering you are a journalist.
And - btw - I have had a fair few hot dinners. I don't have to remain nonymous either.....my name is Stuart MacAllister and I am sorry you had to fee the need to slate me for having the gall to speak about someone whose work is regularly in the public domain and designed for discussion.

ReportThe villager is the best traditional restaurant in westbury. Been there many times, never been displeased with the quality or price.

ReportI haven't been to the Villager but I feel Mark Taylor is being unfairly criticised here by the anonymous 'historywriter' - does he/she have some axe to grind which means they must hide under a pseudonym?
Mark is one of the best food writers around - and I personally find his reviews on a par with Matthew Fort and surpassing Jay Rayner. He is honest and balanced, and in a world where the craft of journalism is so demeaned by amateur writers who seem to think the freshness of vegetables is worth applauding (for instance), his reviews are essential. He really does know his stuff - and I bet he's had far more hot dinners than 'historywriter' has words of wisdom.
I haven't seen Mark for some time but knew him when I worked at the Western Daily Press and I did dine out with him on occasion. He is completely absorbed in what he writes about and highly knowledgable - he has made it his business to be, food-writing is both his profession and vocation. If I was to discover 'historywriter' was a builder and I called him a cowboy without knowing anything about the trade, I'd be expected to be pulled up on it. So, in short, don't criticise what you can't understand.

ReportI enjoy reading Mark's reviews and think he is a good judge. Maybe it is time he came back to the Villager to see if it will make him change his mind. I saw a recent review about the Glass Boat where he said it had really improved.
I have only had one meal at the Villager and from what I can remember it was pricey for what I got, but it sounds like they have a new menu now. I wouldn't mind trying it again if I dont have to spend too much money on something I am not sure about...
